Throughout the past decades, the struggle for equal rights for Lesbian, Gay, Bi-Sexual, and Transgendered people has been part of the Council’s work on discernment of our core values. Beyond our conversations concerning equality in jobs, education, residence, and other life matters, CCC focuses on the debate over the right to marry in full standing with different sex couples.
When the political work concerning the right to marry arose in the 1990s, the Council brought together those who both supported and opposed civil marriage to create some honorable discussion about the foundational Christian principles that underpinned each view.
Over the years the Council has worked through dialogue, public presentations, theological reflection, and the production of a new study guide, Living Lovingly, to enrich the support for marriage equality as a civil issue. The Council was one of the founding members of California Faith for Equality to offer our voice in support of equal rights for all people in civil marriage.
Both alone and in concert with other faith allies, the Council has helped congregations work through their concerns, understand the role of scripture and what it says, and find their way through history and law so their understanding of marriage equality could emerge with full knowledge of those issues.
The Council has been present for denominations, clergy, and lay people who have come to challenge tradition and practice full communion with all people. The Council offers guidance and insight into the elements of this deeply held and passionate concern.
