Dear Friends,
We pass on this observation from Diana Butler Bass with a plea for you all, as you are able, to join a “No Kings” action in your area this weekend. The more clergy and laity who show up for justice, the better. We are spiraling into a vicious autocracy, and our presence does help modify the extremism.

Obviously, we can see from Rev. Black’s experience getting shot with pepper balls, there is risk when standing up for our values. But there is also witness we need to make. We need to stand as he stood to say this can be a humane, lawful world where human rights are cherished. Rev. Black is a Presbyterian minister from the Chicago area. He, by all reports, is all right, but his experience has led to an important lawsuit by ACLU against ICE using excessive force. We do not wish to encourage anyone who is wary of such harm to do what they cannot, but for those who can, please do join a “No Kings” action. We cannot be silent.
At the same time, please commit to non-violence. Provocateurs will be on hand to try to provoke reactions. Any use of violence is exactly what is wanted to excuse invoking the Insurrection Act and martial law. Resist, but do NOT take the bait.
Here is Rev. Bass’s take on what is going on:
A Tale of Two Pastors
WWJD?
OCT 09, 2025
I opened a social media thread today and was met by two news stories, both about pastors.
They need no explanation.
If you think the first image is Christ-like, you probably failed Sunday School. And the second? Well, it speaks for itself.

===================== We Need Your Help! =====================
The California Council of Churches has been at the forefront of many, many social justice and civil rights movements for over 112 years. Like many justice-oriented nonprofits, we have lost most of our financial support since COVID and are working on ways to re-engage in the important work we have done so well for so long. We are currently seeking funding to create an online resource center to help congregations find the best resources to support the social justice ministries they feel their local communities need most from our member denominations, congregations, and partners. If you can help us, please contribute by using the donate button on our website, by PayPal here, or by sending your check to PO Box 980981, West Sacramento CA 95798-0981. If you can help us raise the funding we need from your congregation, judicatory, denomination, or other sources, please contact rick@calchurches.org. Thank you!
